High above the city, Schwanenburg Castle rises as Kleve’s most famous landmark, first mentioned in historical records as early as 1020. Legend says the rulers of Kleve traced their lineage to Lohengrin, the Knight of the Swan, a story commemorated by the golden swan atop the Swan Tower, which offers panoramic views over the city. Within the castle’s historic walls, the Swan Fountain adds a charming touch to the inner courtyard and makes for a lovely photo opportunity.
Discover the castle’s fascinating history on a guided tour, including the Swan Tower (open on weekends), the inner courtyard with its Swan Fountain, and the Mirror Tower.

Love spending time outdoors? Kleve’s historic gardens invite you to explore beautiful landscapes, uncover fascinating stories, and enjoy a peaceful escape into nature.
Discover the Amphitheatre at Springenberg, where reflecting pools, the statue of Pallas Athena, and a striking obelisk create a picturesque Baroque setting. Nearby, the Copper Knob viewpoint offers breathtaking views of the Rhine plain on clear days.
Just across from the amphitheatre stands the Iron Man, a sculpture inspired by a historic monument with a story of its own. Continue to Moritz Park, where a once-grand Baroque pleasure garden has become a charming green oasis in the heart of the city.
For a quieter escape, wander through the Forest Garden, home to exotic trees, winding paths, and a fascinating history as a former spa park. And if you enjoy discovering hidden corners, The Old Park awaits with its scenic viewpoints and traces of Johann Moritz’s vision.
Each garden has its own story to tell. Come and discover yours!

Take a moment to discover its remarkable works of art, from the late Gothic Marian Altar to the 16th-century Cross Altar, as well as memorials by renowned artists Ewald Mataré and Bert Gerresheim.
